The Energy and Commerce Committee is the oldest standing committee in the U.S. House of Representatives and is generally viewed as one of Congress's most important committees. Throughout its history, the Committee has written landmark legislation greatly benefiting the American people: laws to improve the quality of the air we breathe, to clean up toxic waste sites, to provide health care to senior citizens and children, to protect the safety of our food and drugs, to promote a vibrant telecommunications industry, to prevent fraud in our financial markets, and much more.
The House Energy and Commerce Committee oversees national energy policy (including nuclear and renewable energy), public health, consumer protection, and interstate and foreign commerce and communications.
Subcommittee on Health
The Health Subcommittee has sole jurisdiction over Medicaid, the Food and Drug Administration, the National Institutes of Health, and the Centers for Disease Control. It also shares jurisdiction of Medicare Parts B, C and D with the Ways and Means Committee.
Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade, and Consumer Protection
The Commerce, Trade, and Consumer Protection Subcommittee focuses on interstate and foreign commerce, consumer affairs and consumer protection, including privacy matters, cybersecurity, and consumer product safety.
Subcommittee on Energy and Air Quality
The Energy and Air Quality Subcommittee oversees all aspects of national energy policy, nuclear energy, the Clean Air Act, homeland security issues related to energy, regulation of nuclear facilities, and utilities, including regulation of the Bonneville Power Administration.
